3 Ways Psychology is Harming our Families
Here’s My Op-Ed, published in the Harrisburg Patriot-News.
With almost $9 billion spent on therapy each year, is it doing more harm than good? Some physicians and clergy have given up on traditional psychology. Dr. Lew Logan, a physician at Penn State for over fourteen years, encounters many students suffering from mood and anxiety disorders who report not having been helped by traditional psychotherapy. These students are seeking medication as an alternative.
Pastor David Janssen has ministered to his congregation in Pennsylvania for over seventeen years, and he has all but given up on referring people to professional counseling. “I have seen marriages that could have been saved, broken apart because one person sought therapy outside a family approach to counseling. I’ve also seen countless individuals return from clinics, hospitals, and therapy with so little progress to show for it. They feel numb because of the meds, but under the surface the problems still linger.”
I want America to know that we do not have to let our families fall apart. We have become cynical and resigned to divorce, blended families, and children with serious problems.
Let’s stop pretending the decline of our families is acceptable and normal. There are things we can do (and stop doing) that can help any family improve. My goal is to research the family therapy that saved my own marriage, and publish my book on “How to Stay Married and Raise Great Kids.”
Please help me to begin a national dialogue that can breathe new life into our broken families. I envision couples staying together and raising great kids. I can see children learning from their parents’ example, and making us all proud. It’s time to take a stand. Please send this link to journalists and bloggers you know.
Thanks,
David
